Useful Bookmarks for CIT 230

There are a number of useful and commonly used web resources that can be easily accessed via browser bookmarks. The downloadable zip file contains bookmarks of some of these resources. You are encouraged to import the bookmarks into your favorite browser and use them for CIT 230 and beyond.

The directions on how to import the bookmarks into FireFox, Safari, Internet Explorer 8 and Opera are explained. In addition a brief description is also provided of the resources contained in the bookmarks.

Browser Import Directions

All of the directions provided assume that you have downloaded the zip file and unzipped it onto your own computer before proceeding.

FireFox

  1. With FireFox open, click Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks
  2. Click the Favorites (Star) icon and select Import HTML...
  3. From the dialog box that opens, select "From an HTML file", click "Continue"
  4. Navigate to the downloaded and unzipped file. It's name is "230bookmarks.html"
  5. Click "Open"
  6. On the left side panel you should now see a new folder labeled "230"
  7. This folder represents a bookmark organizational group in FireFox
  8. Close the "Organize Bookmarks" window and click the Bookmarks menu item
  9. Using your mouse hover over the 230 folder icon and the list of bookmarks will display
  10. To visit any of the bookmarks, simply click on it.

Safari

  1. With Safari open, click "Import Bookmarks" from the File menu
  2. Navigate to the downloaded and unzipped file. It's name is "bookmarks.html"
  3. Click "Import"
  4. On the left side panel you should now see a new folder waiting to be labeled, but showing the current date
  5. To the right, in the bottom pane, you will see a 230 folder
  6. Drag the 230 folder in the bottom pane to the left side panel
  7. After dragging the 230 folder to the left side panel, you can delete the dated folder
  8. Click on the 230 folder and the list of bookmarks will appear in the bottom pane
  9. To visit any of the bookmarks, simply click on it in the bottom pane

Internet Explorer 8

  1. With IE8 open, click the Favorites button in the top left corner
  2. Click the "options" triangle to the right of the "Add to Favorites" button
  3. Select "Import and Export"
  4. Select the "Import from a file" radio button and click "Next"
  5. Turn on the "Favorites" check box in the dialog box and click "Next"
  6. Browse to the downloaded and unzipped file. It's name is "bookmarks.html"
  7. Select the file and click "Next"
  8. Select a destination folder, the default of "Favorites" is pre-selected
  9. Click "Import" and "Finish"
  10. To access the bookmarks, click the "Favorites" button
  11. In the expanded view, click the "230" folder
  12. The list of bookmarks will appear below the folder
  13. To visit any of the bookmarks, simply click on a bookmark in the list

Opera

  1. With Opera open select "Manage Bookmarks" from the Bookmarks menu
  2. In the new tab, click the "File" button
  3. Select "Import Netscape/FireFox bookmarks"
  4. Browse to the downloaded and unzipped file. It's name is "bookmarks.html"
  5. Select the file and click "Open"
  6. Close the confirmation dialog box
  7. On the left side bar a new folder entitled "Netscape Bookmarks" appears
  8. Expand it twice until you see the 230 folder that is inside of it
  9. Drag the 230 folder from inside of the nested folder to the main level of bookmarks
  10. Delete the two folders that surrounded the 230 folder
  11. At the bottom of the list are a number of lines. These are seperators that can be deleted.
  12. Close the Bookmarks tab
  13. To access the bookmarks, click the "Bookmarks" menu
  14. Hover over the "230" folder
  15. The list of bookmarks will appear as a submenu
  16. To visit any of the bookmarks, simply click on a bookmark in the list

Bookmark Site Descriptions

XHTML Reference
This points to a list of elements that are common within the XHTML standard. These are useful to understand what each element does and basic properties of the element. The URL is http://xhtml.com/en/xhtml/reference/
CSS Reference
This points to a list of CSS properties within the CSS 2.1 standard. These are useful to understand how to implement these properties in CSS rules to style web pages. The URL is http://xhtml.com/en/css/reference/
CodeBurner Reference Tool
This browser add-on is for FireFox. It adds a (X)HTML, CSS and JavaScript reference tool to FireFox for easy access. The appropriate link can be clicked to install the add-on to the FireFox broswer on your own machine. The URL is http://tools.sitepoint.com/codeburner/
Web Developer Tool
This browser add-on is for FireFox. The Web Developer extension adds a menu and a toolbar with various web developer tools. It is one of the most widely used and useful add-ons. The URL is https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/60
Firebug Tool
This browser add-on is for FireFox. Firebug integrates with Firefox to put a wealth of development tools at your fingertips while you browse. You can edit, debug, and monitor CSS, HTML, and JavaScript live in any web page. The URL is https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1843?src=reco
Colorzilla
This browser add-on is for FireFox. It provides an Advanced Eyedropper, ColorPicker, Page Zoomer and other colorful goodies. It is useful for finding out colors on web pages that you visit. The URL is https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/271?src=reco
MeasureIt
This browser add-on is for FireFox. This tool allows you to draw out a ruler to get the pixel width and height of any elements on a web page. The URL is https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/539?src=reco
FireFTP
This browser add-on is for FireFox. FireFTP is a free, secure, cross-platform FTP client for Firefox which provides easy and intuitive access to FTP servers. The URL is https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/684
FileZilla
FileZilla is a free, open source FTP client. Unlike FireFtp, FileZilla is a stand-alone FTP client that is installed. The URL is http://filezilla-project.org/download.php?type=client
NetBeans IDE (PHP Version)
NetBeans is an open-source development program dedicated to providing a rock solid software development platform. It will serve as the primary development tool for the class. It is Java based and must be installed on your computer. It is available for Mac, Windows and Linux. The URL is http://netbeans.org/index.html. To install and run NetBeans also requires that your computer have the Java Runtime Engine (JRE) installed.
Mockingbird
Mockingbird is a wireframe and mockup creation tool. It is web based and completely free. Great for quick and easy mockup of your web pages. The URL is http://gomockingbird.com/
Photoshop.com
The name says it all. This is an online version of Photoshop. It is web based. This site does not have all the tools that the computer version of Photoshop has, but it does have the essentials. The URL is https://www.photoshop.com/
Aviary.com
Aviary.com is a collection of web based photo and illustration tools. The service is free and very powerful. The site also offers FireFox add-on tools for various image related tasks. The URL is http://aviary.com/
Picnik
Picnik is photo editing awesomeness, online, in your browser. It's the easiest way on the Web to fix underexposed photos, remove red-eye, or apply effects to your photos. It has two levels: Free and Premium. The Free level is just fine for everything needed in our class. It is completely online so there is nothing to install. XHTML Tutorial (Basic)

XHTML Tutorial (Technical)
The W3Schools.com web site is well known for providing free, technical help and information for web designers and developers. This tutorial is more technical than the basic tutorial found at Jessey.Net. It is recommended to become familiar with the more technical aspects of XHTML. Adobe Photoshop Tutorials

Jacob Nielsen is one of the foremost researchers and experts in web usability. He publishes a bi-weekly internet-based newsletter called an "Alertbox".
