Advisee Information Page

Welcome to my advisee information page. Please keep in mind that referring to this page does not replace a face-to-face meeting between you and me. It is however a convenient way to find basic information.

Important Major Information

All majors should carefully review the current catalog or the catalog for the year they entered BYU-Idaho. The catalog (printed or online) governs the requirments that students must meet to graduate. In addition, major requirement may be altered by the department and it is the student's responsibility to be aware of those changes and adjust their courses as necessary.

Who are my advisees?

I advise 4-year CIT majors (code 680). To assist you in selecting the classes that you need to take to graduate the IS Department has developed a program planning sheet in PDF format so that it can easily be printed. To view the sheets you need Acrobat Reader which can be obtained free from Adobe.

In addition to a major, all bachelor level students must have a minor or 2 clusters. To assist you, a list of approved minors is available as well a some sample clusters. If you decide to implement clusters into your program of study, you must have each cluster approved using the university form.

How often do I visit with my advisor?

There are at least 2 meeting times during the year that we should meet face-to-face: October and March. During these months the school has an advising week (check the Scroll and your campus mail for actual dates). During these weeks all students are to meet with their advisor. During the meeting we review your program progress, classes that you need to meet graduation requirements and answer questions you may have concerning your program and graduation. Attendance at these meetings is strongly recommended.

Beyond these meetings we can meet whenever you have a question. If you want or need to, you can also call me at (208) 496-1356 or email me at robertsonb@byui.edu. You will also need to meet with me after you have applied for graduation to cover your application and identify any classes that need to be taken prior to graduating. You should apply for graduation early in the semester prior to when you plan to graduate!

What if I decide to change my major?

To change your major is relatively simple, but should not be done on a spur of the moment decision. To change your major go to the Career Advising Center, Room 250 in the Kimball Building. You will need to tell them the name and or major code for the new major. They will make the change and assign you to an advisor in the new major. Make sure you go and visit with your new advisor.

Please make sure that your new major is one that you have considered carefully. If you have questions about a major visit with a faculty member in that area. Ask questions! Remember that each area has specific requirements. If you change your major too often you lessen your chances to actually graduate and it will cost extra tuition and fees (not to mention housing and living expenses) for every extra semester you stay at BYU-Idaho.
